Case Study: Turning a Large Rear Extension into a Year-Round Living Space

Project Details

  • Frame Profile: Smarts Architectural Aluminium
  • Frame Colour: Matt Black
  • Glazing: A-rated, argon-filled, toughened double-sealed units

This recent project highlights how thoughtful design and expert craftsmanship can transform an underperforming space into a stylish, functional part of the home. Our client approached us with a challenge: their spacious rear extension wasn't living up to its potential. With a timber roof and extensive glazing, the room was difficult to heat in winter and uncomfortably warm in summer. On top of that, the chunky wooden framework blocked views of the garden, limiting both natural light and visual connection to the outdoors.

Collaborative Design and Construction

Working closely with a trusted local building team, we reimagined the space with a solid tiled roof and added brickwork. These changes not only gave the home extension a more permanent, cohesive look, but also improved insulation and made the space usable throughout the year. The result was a seamless integration with the main house, no longer a seasonal room, but a comfortable living area for all seasons.

Framing the View

Set in stunning countryside with mature trees and a gentle stream at the garden’s edge, the property’s surroundings were too beautiful to overlook. The initial idea was to match the cottage-style windows of the original home, using a Chartwell Green finish to maintain a traditional feel. Instead, we proposed a more striking alternative: aluminium frames in a classic matt black finish.

This subtle yet impactful choice distinguished the extension as a modern feature while still complementing the home's character. The sleek, narrow sightlines of the aluminium frames allowed for larger panes of glass, enhancing the connection to the garden and drawing the eye to the scenic views beyond.

Bringing the Outside In

A key objective for this project was to blur the line between indoors and out, creating a space that felt intrinsically connected to its natural surroundings. To achieve this, we opted for large picture windows that would frame the garden views and flood the interior with light. Aluminium was the ideal choice, its slim, elegant profiles allowed for expansive glazing with minimal visual interruption.

This design not only amplified the beauty of the outdoor setting but also brought a warm, airy quality to the interior, enhancing the sense of space and fostering a true indoor-outdoor living experience.

Precision Installation and Seamless Coordination

Once the design and specifications were finalised, our team conducted a detailed survey to align the glazing perfectly with the planned interior finishes. Careful consideration was given to features such as floor levels and thresholds, ensuring a smooth flow into the next phases of the build.

Our experience working alongside contractors meant all preparatory work was completed to an exceptional standard, laying the groundwork for a flawless installation.

The fitting of the custom aluminium frames went smoothly, with our expert team executing the installation to exacting standards. The final result not only met but exceeded our client’s expectations—delivering a bright, versatile space that’s both beautiful and practical.

Project Outcome

We’re immensely proud to have been part of this remarkable home extension renovation, which has transformed an underused space into a beautiful, practical room. This project stands as a testament to the impact of expert design, quality materials, and attention to detail. The completed space not only met but exceeded our client’s expectations, adding a valuable year-round living area that harmonises with both the home’s character and the surrounding natural landscape.
